A Book on Branding & Persian Cultural Thought

The Greater the Good Name,
the Greater the Worth

هرکه نامش نیک، ارجش بیشتر

A name is never
only a name.

Across centuries of Persian thought and literature, a name has carried identity, reputation, meaning, and memory — never merely a label, always a record kept by others.

This book carries that inheritance into the language of contemporary branding, asking what a name still owes the people who speak it.

In branding, this same pattern repeats. A company name is chosen quickly, often in a single meeting. What follows — years of behavior, promises kept or broken, work delivered — is what actually decides whether that name comes to mean something worth trusting.

From the Persian Canon

سعدیا مرد نکونام نمیرد هرگز
مرده آن است که نامش به نکویی نبرند

A man of good name never truly dies — the dead is the one whose name is no longer spoken well.

Sa'di, 13th-century Persian poet

The Book

How does a name
become worth remembering?

A name begins as identity — a way to be told apart from everything else. Held long enough, it becomes meaning: a shorthand for what someone stands for.

Meaning, repeated with consistency, becomes reputation. Reputation, carried across time, becomes memory. And what is remembered well is, in the end, what is worth the most.

This book traces that chain through Persian literary thought and applies it to the discipline of branding — arguing that the value of a name was never a modern invention.

What makes this different from a typical branding book is the refusal to start with tactics. Before logo, before tone of voice, before any visual system, there is a name — and a name only holds value once it has been lived up to, repeatedly, in front of witnesses.

Within the Book

  1. 01 Name What a name is asked to carry before anything else is known.
  2. 02 Identity How a name is shaped into something distinct and recognizable.
  3. 03 Meaning The point at which a name begins to stand for something.
  4. 04 Reputation Meaning, tested and confirmed by others over time.
  5. 05 Culture The inherited language a name is always, knowingly or not, speaking in.
  6. 06 Memory What remains of a name once its original moment has passed.
  7. 07 Legacy A name's final worth — measured by what it left behind.

This is not a manual. It offers no ten-step framework and no checklist for building a "strong brand." Its method is closer to that of the Persian poets it draws from: observe carefully, state plainly, and trust the reader to draw their own conclusion about what a name is worth once its story has been told.

Portrait of Maryam Vanaki, author of The Greater the Good Name, the Greater the Worth

Maryam Vanaki

Maryam Vanaki is a branding and business strategy consultant based in Tehran. Her work sits at the intersection of identity, culture, and commercial strategy — helping organizations understand their name as an asset built over time, not a decision made once.

This book extends that practice into its cultural roots, drawing on Persian literature as a lens through which reputation, meaning, and worth were understood long before branding had a name of its own.
